'Seasons at Cedarmere' Spring Brunch - 4 May 2014
Professor Emeritus Gilbert H. Muller, author of William Cullen Bryant: Author of America
THE FRIENDS OF CEDARMERE, INC held their "Seasons at Cedarmere" Spring event at the Sea Cliff Yacht Club on Sunday, 4th May 2014.
The event raised funds for the restoration of William Cullen Bryant's study at Cedarmere, and featured a presentation and Q&A by noted academic, Professor Emeritus Gilbert H. Muller, author of William Cullen Bryant: Author of America.
Vince Brewton of ForeWord Review writes: "William Cullen Bryant is less a critical biography of its subject than a large chapter of Americana spanning almost a century of tumultuous, nation-making events: ...Never tedious... Muller splendidly chronicles the nineteenth century, narrates a vivid New York story, and offers a compelling portrait of an American genius. The man whom James Fenimore Cooper called “the Author of America” deserves no less."
Professor Muller held the audience in rapt attention with his details of the life and legacy of William Cullen Bryant.
Unlike most biographies, William Cullen Bryant: Author of America begins with the events surrounding William Cullen Bryant's untimely death, then commences with his life. Abolishionist, poet, editor, homeopath, man about town, horticulturalist, invenerate traveller, a founding father of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and New York's Central Park, William Cullen Bryant, the audience also discovered, had a sense of fun and mischief.
The Sea Cliff Yacht Club put on a delicious brunch buffet. Guests were treated to views of the harbor and a sailing regatta.
The event was well-attended, and included New York State Assemblyman Charles D. Lavine (District 13), Nassau County Legislature member Ms. Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (11th District), and Eric D. Swenson, Esq., Executive Director of the Hempstead Harbor Protection Committee, as well as the Friends of Cedarmere Board of Directors, members and friends.
